Home News Local Opportunities How the Capability Fund Is Driving Wakefield’s Cycling Vision Go Back
Guest Blog: Louise Galloway on behalf of Wakefield Council

Hello, cycling enthusiasts of Wakefield! I am thrilled to share some exciting developments in our ongoing efforts to promote cycling and enhance accessibility in our beautiful district, all made possible through the incredible support of the Capability Fund. As we strive to make Wakefield an even more bike-friendly community, here are some highlights of the initiatives we’ve undertaken.

Bike Maintenance Training for Community Impact

Thanks to the Capability Fund, four members from two local Community Interest Companies (CICs) have recently completed Cytech Level 2 Bike Maintenance Training. These skilled individuals will soon be rolling out Bike Dr sessions across the district. One of their first projects involves collaborating with Mears Housing in Wakefield to service bikes at locations where asylum seekers are housed. This initiative not only promotes cycling but also extends a helping hand to those in need.

Adaptive Cycling Sessions at Pugneys Country Park

We are currently halfway through the delivery of Adaptive Cycling Sessions at Pugneys, taking place every Tuesday and Friday. These sessions cater to wheelchair users and individuals with limited mobility, providing them with the opportunity to explore Pugneys Country Park using e-assist handcycles, foot pedal recumbent bikes, or two-wheel e-assist bikes. It’s about breaking barriers and making the joy of cycling accessible to everyone.

Off-Road Wheeling Sessions at Pugneys Country Park

Scheduled for April and May, our Off-Road Wheeling Sessions at Pugneys will offer wheelchair users and those with limited mobility the chance to traverse Pugneys using Mountain Trikes and e-assist handcycles. Save the dates, and join us for these empowering sessions:

Tuesday 9th April: 10.30am – 12.30pm, 1.30pm – 3.30pm

Tuesday 16th April: 10.30am – 12.30pm, 1.30pm – 3.30pm

Tuesday 23rd April: 10.30am – 12.30pm, 1.30pm – 3.30pm

Tuesday 30th April: 10.30am – 12.30pm, 1.30pm, 3.30pm

Tuesday 14th May: 10.30am – 12.30pm, 1.30pm – 3.30pm

Tuesday 21st May: 10.30am – 12.30pm, 1.30pm – 3.30pm

HAF Holiday Club Bikes

In a move to empower the younger generation, we have purchased 15 bikes and helmets to be used for this year’s Aspire Kidz Club. This initiative allows children to develop and improve their cycling skills in a safe and secure environment.

By the start of the summer, an impressive 500 children will have attended balance sessions, and 140 children will have participated in learn-to-ride sessions, all thanks to the Cycle North program.

These initiatives underscore our commitment to fostering a cycling culture that is inclusive, educational, and community-driven. The Capability Fund has played a pivotal role in turning these ideas into reality, and we are excited about the positive impact these initiatives will have on cycling across the Wakefield District. Stay tuned for more updates, and let’s continue pedalling towards a healthier and more connected community!

Happy cycling!
